Developmental Guidelines for Age Appropriate Curriculum

We pledge to provide your child with a wonderful preschool experience from the beginning in our Time for Tots and Teddy Bear classes right through to our Chipmunk and Butterfly classes. Children are having fun while making new friends and learning.

At FACE Children's Center your child will develop at his or her own individual rate. While interacting with the children our teachers develop children-driven curriculum units where the children have shown interest. All areas of cognitive development are taught within each unit through the careful planning of our staff.

Typically, two-year-olds are learning to produce language rapidly. They need simple books, pictures, puzzles and music as well as time and space for active play such as jumping and running. They are acquiring social skills and are at the beginning stages of sharing.

Our curriculum for the three-year-old child emphasizes language activity and movement through singing and dancing. Appropriate activities include art, puzzles, blocks and many opportunities for listening to and talking about simple stories. Hands on learning through sensory experiences with paint and water-play delight the young child and produce many teachable moments.

Four year-olds often enjoy a greater variety of experiences and more small motor activies like scissors, art and cooking. They are more able to concentrate and remember as well as recognize small objects by shape, color and size. Children at this age develop beginning basic math concepts and problem solving skills. This child is becoming more independent and can do more for him/ herself. Children are expected to take increased responsibility for their belongings and actions.

Five year-olds combine ideas into more complex relations (for example, number concepts such as one-to-one correspondence) and have growing memory capacity and fine motor skills. Some children display a growing interest in the functional aspect of written language, such as recognizing meaningful words and trying to write their own names. We provide a print-rich environment that stimulates the development of language and literacy skills in a meaningful context. As attention span develops, our curriculum will expand beyond self and home as children develop their own social self and a real understanding of others and the world around them.
